I just did an update with the updater, rebooted and all is well. I have

updating with synaptic and the terminal, but this worked.

Just to clear this up,
What is your version of Ubuntu?
I don't think there is a version 16.14 as the Ubuntu versions are in format
yy.mm of release date.
Did you update to 16.04 or 16.10?
