Please copy the list on all replies. How the data are stored depends on the selected backend, so either an XML file (the default) or a SQL database. In the latter case one certainly can do independent queries; Wm has written quite a bit about that on the user list, but it's a bit out-of-scope for this list, which is about developing GnuCash itself.
