Which I’ve now done. Serna Free is free-as-in-beer. It was a free limited-feature version of a commercial product; the free version is apparently no longer updated, but remains available on a variety of download sites. It has abundant documentation and the User Interface, while a bit clunky, is pretty easy to use after reading the first couple of chapters of the tutorial. It loaded guide/C/gnucash-guide.xml without complaint. I was able to create in a few minutes a patch from David T’s proposal in Bug 687290[1], which I attached for perusal. It makes some gratuitous formatting changes and adds a line to the file about how it was created with Sentex Serna Free, but otherwise the patch seems fine.
