I meant 1.3.36. On another computer I have swig-1.3.40 and also gcc-4.4.

Thanks for your attention, I'm currently running swig 1.3.40, gcc 4.4.5
on ubuntu 10.10 iirc.
I can come online on the IRC channel for smoother troubleshooting if
possible.
