I haven't compiled in awhile, and was following the steps for building gnucash on the wiki at http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Building (specifically Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04)
The .configure fails on the dbi portion UNLESS I add --disable-dbi to the .configure options. Since this didn't happen a few weeks ago, was the option changed to encourage folks to try the dbi backend instead of using the "traditional" xml file?
