I recently reported successful pdf generation under Linux Fedora Core 7 (see <https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-devel/2008-September/024056.html>).
Attached is a patch to the gnucash-docs README which adds the special requirements to generate pdf using the fop tool chain which I recommend. If this is accepted, and the new tool chain is acceptable, then I will continue to add patches to more fully implement the new tool chain. Regards. -Tom
