Yes, I believe that's the one I meant..  It's been a long, long time
since I actually looked at it.  But I seem to remember that you could
actually use that to assign splits to a lot.

I don't think so. I looked through lot-viewer.c and it doesn't contain anything that assigns splits to lots. I also looked at the callers of gnc_lot_add_split and can't see any way to get to any of them from the lot viewer.

The comments at the top of lot-viewer.c make it sound like a work in progress:
