Which search functionality? Searching the mailing lists work.
It's possible that searching the website does not, but I don't
have much control over that. ;)

I've never heard a first-hand account of these kinds of thefts.
I suspect they're do to people not being careful with their
paypal userid/password, or perhaps being phished.
