This is exactly the right place for your posting.
There hasn't been much specific work on the business side,
but there are long-term plans for such features. You should
check out: http://cvs.gnucash.org/linux/gnucash/projects.html
for more details about future additions.
That page is also a good place to start in picking new things
to do, and yes, there are lots of things for you to work on :)
GnuCash is written in C and Scheme, and we'd like to keep it
that way, so that would rule out using C++.
Support for an SQL backend has been started and Linas Vepstas
can give you more details in that area.
