G'day everyone,
A possible idea to keep down the total size used (not necessarily
the number of files) would be to split the monolithic GnuCash data file
into seperate files for each year (or some other timeperiod). Backups of
files are only made when they change.
Most activity would occur in the current year, but much less would
occur in the previous years. Hence there would be some occasions where
no backups would be needed of the previous years because no changes to
those years will have been made. As such, while we will end up with more
files, we would use less space.
This is not a suggestion that GnuCash make historical data difficult
to access. I would expect GnuCash to read in all the files upon startup,
as they are all just seperate parts of the overall data.
The downsides to this idea are:
* More files get used.
* Users might think that the `extra' files are backups and
delete them. This would be very bad.
* More complexity than current system. Possibly a difficult
change to the GnuCash inner-workings. (I'm not familiar
with them yet.)
Cheers,
Paul
