Right you are. Good point. It doesn't matter in HTML or Text or TeX
if the date remains "a date," but it may matter in spreadsheet form.

Indeed. *Good* point.
In effect, we need to be able to attach borders using some sort of
"schema" that associates them not with each cell, but with a group
of cells.
Something like having six (or more?) values corresponding to the
edges of:
+--+--+
| | |
+--+--+
| | |
+--+--+
Which could then be associated with a line.
I'm thinking of there being some sort of pattern matching so that
it could be more sophisticated, but have to think about it quite a
bit more.

I think you're right; the "way of doing something more sophisticated"
