What is the purpose of printing the reports out in ASCII? Is it
1) To be able to import them into other documents?
2) To print them on a printer that doesn't support GS?
3) Some other reason?
The thing that I am concerned about is that, ultimately, there will
be quite a few different reports. Supporting a multiplicity
of output styles in the code for each of the reports will become
a nightmare. We would probably have to
generate reports in an intermediate format (which would describe the
logical structure of the report) and then
write a processor to convert from that intermediate format to
the final output format.
However, such a method would take considerable time and effort
to write, and if we could restrict the output required to two forms
would probably be unnecessary. If we could therefore reach some
form of consensus on that output formats we wish to implement,
we can probably avoid this complexity.
Could one of the developers give me some guidance here?
