If I am not mistaken Nana is sort of a replacement for assert.h (I
might be oversimplifying but that is what I gathered from reading the
GNU web).  This might be useful to keep in or learn more about.  I
don't know much about Nana yet though i will be soon enough.

What needs to be done for Autoconf ?  I have some experience with it
and might be able to help.  What do we want to do ?  Remove the
perl/eperl dependencies  entirely ?
