Hi All-
I'm resending after learning about the list problems:
I've gone to heroic lengths, getting all of the prereq software
installed on my machine to permit me to run gnucash, and now I have a
question: Is this normal output upon starting gnucash from the command
line?
***************************************************************************
darkstar:~$ gnucash&
[1] 803
darkstar:~$ gnucash: bootstrap file is /usr/share/gnucash/scm/bootstrap.scm
(Register #(Register foo 50-foo boolean foo something #<procedure ()> #<procedure (x)>
#f #f #f #f))
(Security #(Security foo 50-foo string foo something #<procedure ()> #<procedure (x)>
#f #f #f #f))
(Appearance #(Appearance foo2 50-foo2 boolean foo2 something #<procedure ()>
#<procedure (x)> #f #f #f #f) #(Appearance Default background color
50-background-color string Set the default background color. #<procedure ()>
#<procedure (c)> #<procedure default-background-color ()> #f #f #f))
***************************************************************************
I'm none too sure about the correctness of the install I did on all of
the prereq software, so I just want to make sure everything's working
ok.
Also, does anyone have any idea why my drop down menus (File, Account,
Help) are kinda screwed up in appearance? Specifically, the left side
of the leftmost character in each of the words, File, Account, and
Help in the dropdown menus is missing. It's like they each have
something else shoved up too close against their left sides that's
overlapping, but there's nothing else there except the gray of the
window.
Also, is this (the following) normal? And is it a significant
problem?
This happens whenever I close a window (like the help window).

And most importantly, there is this following problem:
I can get GnuCash to start up (with the messages that I've described
above), but it does just about nothing else! Help works, the menus
work (they look a little screwy, as I've mentioned already), the
hyper-links in help work, but:
1) I cannot save a file,
When I try (as a part of quitting), it gets into an infinite loop of
dialogue boxes that say, "There have been changes since last save.
Save file?" And each time I answer "yes," it gives me a box to enter
the filename, and then it comes back with the same thing...
If I try to just "save as," then it seems to take the command, but
nothing results. No file in the directory that I started gnucash up
in. Does the file end up somewhere else?
2) I cannot import a qif file, and
When I try, it seems to take the command ok, but no information shows
up in the account window. What should happen?
3) if I make a new account, the information does not seem to be saved
anywhere (as evidenced by the fact that if I quit and come back, no
new account is present).
What gives? Any clues? I read the instructions in help on importing
a qif file and did as they advised. Still no luck.
Any help would be much appreciated. And *thanks* for making gnucash!
(Yea! A replacement for Quicken!). I anxiously await gnucash's
evolution to what sounds like it will be a super-high quality product
that will let me throw away Quicken!
