My machine is a Thinkpad T444s running Ubuntu 14.04. When my machine is
docked, I have a large monitor that is configured to be on the left side to
match it's physical location. I also have this monitor configured to use
the activities bar.

This works well until I undock and redock the laptop. When I undock the
active screen becomes just the laptop and all windows move over there.
That's expected. However, when I redock the machine, the large monitor is
now on the right side in the virtual layout and the laptop is still holds
the activity monitor.

When I turn off the computer and then turn it back on while docked all the
display properties are preserved as I would expect, so it just makes me a
bit reluctant to undock the machine while it's on.

Where is the code that maintains the display configurations? Can someone
point me to how this configuration is stored and see if I can somehow
preserve this state for the windows and screen?
