I can confirm the significant delays in animation starting from GS 3.6 on Ubuntu 12.10, and especially in GS 3.6.3 on Ubuntu 13.04.
These are some problems: - Significant lag when Overview is open for the first time in GS 3.6. It can take up to 20 (!) seconds. Second time and later it will open in about 1 second or so. This did not happen in GS 3.4. - Significant delays when switching using Alt+Tab in GS 3.6.3 on U13.04. For example, using YAWL icons I can switch from Chrome to Files (Nautilus) and back in about 1 second. Using Alt+Tab it takes more than 2 seconds to switch to Files from Chrome and more than 1 second to switch back. Given that I press Alt+Tab and release immediately so that Alt+Tab icons do NOT appear at all, this looks quite strange to me, and is clearly GS lag. Moreover, switching this way raises CPU usage to 50% (!) for about 1 second, and the more I use Alt+Tab, the more memory is taken by Gnome-Shell, and the slower Alt+Tab becomes. This happens even if I have all extensions turned off and restart Shell (kind of pure Shell experience). This makes Alt+Tab almost unusable to me. I do not care that much, because I have an alternative, but something clearly wrong going on here. - BTW, switching to Files takes longer for a reason: there are significant problems with Files (Nautilus) 3.6.3, though it might not be directly related to GS itself. For some reason the whole system freezes for about half to a whole second when Files gets focus. This happens when I switch to it from any other app, or when I switch to another workspace that has Files focused. It looks like there is some kind of extra work going on every time Files gets focus, and I do not know if it is GS doing it (for example, remote menu) or Files doing itself. This seems especially strange given that Files 3.6 has become a more basic file manager compared to previous versions, yet noticeably slower than it used to be. Even a simple folder change is significantly slower than it used to be in Files 3.4. Once again, this is tested in clean GS without any extensions, and did not happen in GS 3.4. - Lags in animation. Sometimes the whole system would suddenly freeze during animations, wait for several or sometimes even up to 10 or more seconds, and then continue. This happens quite often, but on quite irregular basis. One guess might be that it is Javascript garbage collection working, but I have no clue if it is even close to the true cause, I am just describing how it feels like. Vadim.
