After I sent that email I did notice that the problem was in the extension using the 'gnome-shell-extension' gettext domain in the metadata.json, more so that initTranslations() itself. cheers for the clarification (I'll have to check my other extensions for this as I probably just copy-pasted the files from one extension to the next and modified them)
