To verify what was mentioned another thread, I just tried NVidia version 270.41.03 (latest pre-release at this time) on a 9600GT card. I'm happy to report that Gnome-Shell compiled from GIT is now silky smooth, no lag issues at all. Before it was quite jerky at times, especially if a gtk-python app was thrown into the mix. Now windows zoom and scale as well as I've seen on any compositing window manager, vdpau and native apps look great too. Hope this helps!
