I mentioned about checking translations in another bug, does this sound practical to catch translation bugs? Write a tool (maybe part of intltool) to extract all translations and special comments (which are extracted from source code, just like "translators" comments) to a C file. The "special comments" are abitrary C code that developers write to do the check.
