After reading the code with my untrained eyes, it seems gok handle it specially: if (has_level_2) { gok_modifier_add ("level2"); level2_string = g_utf8_strchr (level2_string, -1, '|'); if (level2_string) ++level2_string; /* works because '|' is one byte */ has_level_2 = strlen (level2_string) > 0; } Looks like gok is not using Q_() macros, and just strips "anything|" returned from the string returned by gettext call. So that means translating it into msgstr "level 2|" is actually fine. But I think it is still safer to ask gok developers...
