Does this require the emacs "po-mode"? On Ubuntu the package for PO Mode is not available by default. You would need to run "apt-get install gettext-el". I tried "C-x 4" (also had to press Enter) and what I got was the PO header in the lower half window. It looks quite interesting to try out PO Mode in emacs, as it configures the editor to allow editing only the translated area, and helps much more.
