The issue is how we create those strings and recognize what they are. I suppose we can parse the UID or store the type of the object directly when we serialize. That would allow us to special case out text items.
I believe if he had an item source that created those strings he had aliased it would all work, excepting the lunacy of that. It's possible to do, it's even reasonable to accomplish. However its another complication that might suggest there is a better way. I don't know, but I will ponder on it and make a branch with a fix.
