Don't thinbk so. Rarely do cut and paste. tried some
emacs/xterm/openoffice stuff just now - doesn't seem to trigger it. will
monitor.

Yup -
Universe contains 82615 items.
For information when I ran from the command line with --debug, I did see
a number of messages such as:
** (Do:32585): WARNING **: FindNextFile: Bad encoding for
'/home/pete/.dvdcss/\xb4\xf4-a9981118ba195e66-0000000000'
Consider using MONO_EXTERNAL_ENCODINGS
not sure if that is of any use or even related. have deleted these odd
files now.
