Hi All, I am delighted to inform you all that caret and focus tracking has landed in GNOME Shell 3.9.91 and as of 3.9.91 focus and caret tracking is available for GNOME Shell's magnifier to compliment the mouse tracking that has already been in place for a while.
The new feature means that the magnifier can now be used while typing documents, for caret browsing pages on the internet and also for using the tab or arrow keys to navigate around the GNOME Shell desktop, for example. The GSettings for focus and caret tracking are not yet integrated into the Accessibility Dialogue for the magnifier. We hope to get these GSettings into a gui as soon as possible, but in the meantime, here is a quick how-to explaining what can be done to changing GSettings (should it be required). To set focus tracking open up a terminal and type: $ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.a11y.magnifier focus-tracking 'mysetting' Where 'mysetting' is either 'push', 'centered', 'proportional' or 'none' (setting to 'none' will disable focus-tracking). To set caret tracking open up a terminal and type: $ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.a11y.magnifier caret-tracking 'mysetting' Where 'mysetting' is either 'push', 'centered', 'proportional' or 'none' (setting to 'none' will disable caret-tracking). You can check the current setting just by typing the following into a terminal for caret and focus tracking respectively: $ settings get org.gnome.desktop.a11y.magnifier caret-tracking $ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.a11y.magnifier focus-tracking Any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Because the feature is so new, it is expected that improvements will need to be made to the work. I would like to urge users of the magnifier to get in touch with plenty of feedback so we can learn how people are finding the new feature and also to learn about any ideas people have for how this feature (or anything else related to the work) can be improved.
