Thomas, I've a feeling that you've downloaded the wrong ISO. For what you want to do, You'll need the alternate install image from Ubuntu. There, you'll also find an installation manual. I suggest you download ubuntu-6.06-alternate-i386.iso if you have an Intel processor.
