Hello Peter and all, Peter, this is in answer to some of your exchange with Kenny and your input on Braille and the Dectalk USB. I am going to paraphrase as best I can since the quotations would be rather long.<smile>
First, I would like to answer your question on installing the Dectalk USB firmware. For this synthesizer, I don't know about others, the firmware must be installed by USB only. That is how I have been installing it when I attempted to fix the problem. Second, as a rather new user to Linux, both text-based and graphical, I should let all of you know that I had no idea that Gnopernicus would try to look for Braille, or anything else, <smile> for that matter, on the serial port. Had I known that there might be a possible problem, I would not have left the Dectalk connected. I figured since Gnopernicus worked with Festival, a software speech utility, that I wouldn't have to worry about whether the Dectalk was connected or not. Finally, as a person who must use both Windows and Linux for school due to studying how to network and use computers with various operating systems, I understand your need to be familiar with all of them for the purposes of accessibility.<smile> I think that in the case of the Dectalk USB, that the vendor is willing to work on their end to resolve the bug. It was never my attention to blame one particular program for my crashed synthesizer. My point was to avail myself of any and all resources, both here on this list and within the Linux community, as well as the folks at Access Solutions who make the Dectalk. Best regards, and thanks to all of you for your assistance.
