Well I added -I/usr/local/vmd/plugins/include to CPPFLAGS and 
-L/usr/local/vmd/plugins/FREEBSDAMD64/molfile to LDFLAGS and the recompiled
editconf is still uable to properly parse the vmd-style pdb

Oh well
