Those are generated when the system is crashing.  They are provided to
help you to work out what is happening, why the system is crashing.  You
might not have "asked for them", but they are there for a very important
reason.

They are backing up files because it is writing out files for which
there is already a file with the same name.  If that file wasn't there,
then of course it would not be generating a back up.  The backup file
feature is handy, because it avoids you inadvertantly loosing an
important file when you run something, without fully realising what you
are doing.  Once things are done and you are 110% sure you don't need
them anymore, you can simply delete them.
