I actually wrote an application to do this, which I've been using for ~10 years and it works well: https://github.com/ctrlo/admonitor
At the time I found the available open source monitoring applications too complicated or overkill for what I wanted, so I wrote me own :) (Maybe the options are better now, I've not looked back)
