Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier; July is vacation time here in
Sweden.
I take that answer as "yes, I have logged in on the Jira project in
question with the same credentials gitlab uses and successfully
commented on an issue" ;)
Unfortunately I have no clue what else could be the issue. If you do
manage to get it working, please pose the solution to the mailing list
so others can benefit from your insights.
