The bad thing is if this works, it will be a barrier to upgrade in the future. You will always have to re-apply the fix after upgrades. I honestly don't believe it will present a problem - I have never heard of someone having this type of concern and have worked with some large GitLab installations. Of course, do what you think will be best and works for you.
