Try reading from start to finish: https://git-scm.com/doc

Then this may make sense: https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Git-Branching-Remote-Branches

It says it adds an upstream tracking reference, but when I search the website for references, it does not explain what a "tracking reference" is.
The word tracking has no results on the page.

Found in the manpage for git-push:

      -u, --set-upstream
For every branch that is up to date or successfully
    pushed, add
upstream (tracking) reference, used by argument-less
    git-pull(1)
and other commands. For more information, see
            branch.<name>.merge in git- config(1).
