I'm far from an expert on this, but my experience with upgrading the
Omnibus release of gitlab is that it's far from a time consuming task.

If you aren't using the Omnibus version I'm guessing it's more time
consuming, but maybe it's worth considering moving to it so future
upgrades are less painful?
