I didn't have any trouble setting up LDAP support with Gitlab. The things I
would check would be the port and method. Make sure that you have the
correct security setting (ssl, tls, etc) and that the port that you are
using matches with that setting. You could try using the command line ldap
tools to check connectivity with the exact settings you are using with
Gitlab from the same machine, as the same user to make sure things are all
setup correctly.
