As I was able to use sendmail outside of gitlab (as long as I am able to specify the sender), I replaced the smtp configuration shown below (in /etc/gitlab/gitlab.rb) with one line:
gitlab_rails['gitlab_email_from'] = "<sender email address>" Running gitlab-ctl reconfigure resulted in sendmail being used and the sender address being set properly (my upstream smtp gw requires sender email addresses to be permissioned). It works now. ...
