The other have said already WHY it may display other lengths than you may have expected, here's the solution: In the Preferences window, select "Display" and press the "Calibrate..." button there to calibrate GIMP for your display. This dialog used to show up on the very first GIMP start in earlier times, I don't know about the current version though. HTH, Daniel
