If you save layers individually following Sven's advice, then they become separate files. But unless you are doing more than you state, I would bring up the base file in Acrobat Reader and then print each page "to file" with different names of course. This gives you x number of separate Postscript files. Conversion back to pdf's is easily done with the Ghostscript script ps2pdf. An hpefully the text etc. is preserved as text and not as bitmaps. There are horses for courses and tools for tasks. Gimp is not primarily a pdf or ps tool.
