I just tried the steps you posted for creating the rounded corners 
rectangle and came up with this:

This is using Gimp 2.6.5 on Ubuntu 8.10 Linux (64-bit).  Are your 
results differernt from mine or does my result show the same, 
non-antialiased corners you're getting?
