Hi Gimp is powerful/wonderful, and sophisticate; which means that learning how to use every tool doesn't come without an effort. Luckily, as you have already been pointed, there is good documentation. Likewise, there is this nice book I'd recommend you to read, Beginning Gimp (Akkana Peck) that is very helpful. And last but not least, the more fun way of learning Gimp is no doubt with Roy Steinort in www.meetthegimp.org. Very nice and easy to understand webcast from zero.
