Probably a problem with Gimp's font-cache. Try this: search for a file called .fonts-cache-1 (With Gimp for Windows, it is in "Documents and Settings"/<username> dont ask me where it is under Linux or other systems ...) Rename it. Start Gimp. This will take quite long as the font-cache is rebuilt. Exit Gimp. Start Gimp. It should start up in "normal" time again.
