Sorry, but all these links you posted about how to install fonts on X11 are just misleading. GIMP 2.0 doesn't use the X server or any X font server to access fonts.
There's a page explaining how GIMP 2.0 handles fonts at gimp.org:

Thanks for clarifying that. Apparently, XFree86 4.3.0 and later use Fontconfig for font support so the link I posted describing issuing the "fc-cache" really is applicable in this case. :)
