Hi John - In general, use the GIMP for working on images by hand, one-off stuff, retouching, and anything that needs your keen eye and steady hand every step of the way. Use ImageMagick for all the batch stuff: mass conversions from one image format to another, creating a bunch of thumbnails, etc. It is possible to use the GIMP in batch mode, but it's usually not The Right Tool. On the other hand, ImageMagick isn't really good for hands-on image manipulation.
