Tom - For things like lifting a person from a jpeg and putting s/he/it somewhere else, there's a good series of tutorials in "Grokking The GIMP", available online and for html download. Follow the links from the GIMP's Xtns/Web Browser menu to get it. There's some really good ideas on using layers, channels, and a variety of ways to separate the figure from the ground that will be of inestimable value.
