Hi David -

gfig is found in the <Image>->Filters->Render menu as Gfig.  If 
you're only running version 1.0 you should really upgrade.  
Current version is 1.2.2 (hot of the presses a couple of days 
ago), and the increased functionality and ease of use is really 
great.  Check http://www.gimp.org for availabliity of a packaged 
version.  I use the source tarball myself, so I can't help you 
there.
