good chip for LCDs?

I know this is offtopic, but I was wondering (since there are so many people
on this list who have experience with graphics chipsets) what would be a
good chip or chipset to buy for powering a small color LCD screen? This is
for a palmpilot-style device for a friend's senior project for school.  I am
under the impression that most color LCD screens have a VGA interface?
