*Funded MA and PhD positions in the Political Ecology of Urban*

*and Peri-Urban Agriculture and ‘Net Zero’ Food Systems*

I am seeking to recruit up to two graduate students (either PhD or MA) to
contribute to a new interdisciplinary research project that critically
evaluates the potential of urban and peri-urban agriculture to contribute
to ‘net-zero’ food systems. The positions are funded through a SSHRC
Sustainable Agricultural Research Initiative Grant titled “Toward
Sustainable Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture for Net-Zero Food Systems
<https://www.utoronto.ca/news/research-project-explores-how-urban-agriculture-can-reduce-emissions-and-increase-access-food>.”
The successful applicants will join the graduate program in Geography and
Planning
<https://www.geography.utoronto.ca/graduate-geography/prospective/about> at
the University of Toronto; their work will be supervised by Professor Ryan
Isakson.

Broadly, our research will focus upon the political ecology of urban and
peri-urban agriculture and students are encouraged to pursue independent
research under this umbrella. They will also contribute to targeted
research into how land access and control shapes the environmental
sustainability of urban and peri-urban agriculture in and around the
Greater Toronto Area, with a particular eye towards soil management, crop
selection, and other agricultural practices related to greenhouse gas
emissions and sequestration. The successful applicants will join a team of
community partners and academics from the natural and social sciences
conducting research with the objective of fomenting environmentally
sustainable and socially just urban food systems.

These positions provide competitive funding package with two years of
support for MA students and four years of support for PhD students. In
addition to a tuition waiver, the positions include a competitive research
stipend and budgets for research costs and conference travel to present
research results. I am particularly interested in applications from
students from equity-deserving groups, including those with lived
experience relevant to the project.

To be eligible for these positions, students must be accepted for graduate
study in the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of
Toronto. Applications to the graduate program
<https://www.geography.utoronto.ca/graduate-geography/prospective/application-admissions>
must
be submitted by *January 10, 2025*. Ideally, applicants will have previous
degrees in political economy, human geography, environmental studies, food
studies, or other related disciplines.

If you are interested one of these positions, please send me a very short
letter of interest along with your CV and unofficial transcripts at
ryan.isak...@utoronto.ca. Please feel free to contact me with any
questions.
