FYI, a proposal by the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Science to consider
scrapping tenure in the university system. I didn't find this to be a very
comeplling argument (for example, if women are hamstrung by the tenure system
in terms of family decisions, why would this be any different under a
contract-based system? And would a "national committee" effectively protect
academic freedom?). However, it's likely to ignite lots of discussion inside
and outside the halls of academe!
