Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies of the Middle East and North Africa
The University of Arizona (UA) College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS)
invites applications for a new assistant professor (tenure-track, academic
year) position in Environmental Studies of the Middle East and North Africa,
broadly defined, to begin Fall 2016.

The successful candidate will join the university's vibrant interdisciplinary
communities of SBS, environmental studies, and Middle East and North African
studies specialists.

We are interested in a broad range of social science and historical approaches
to human/environment studies. The successful candidate will be well qualified
to engage in undergraduate and graduate teaching; have an active research
agenda, with research in or centrally related to the Middle East and/or North
Africa; have potential for externally supported research; and have an interest
in participating in outreach activities. Candidates are expected to have the
PhD in hand by July 1, 2016. Proficiency in at least one Middle Eastern
language is highly desirable (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish or a related
language).

The exact field of specialization is open; the appointment may be made in a
single SBS unit or as a joint appointment across two units. See
http://web.sbs.arizona.edu/college/ for a full listing of SBS units.

The UA features an extensive program in Middle Eastern and North African
studies. The School of Middle Eastern & North African Studies (MENAS) offers a
BA, MA and PhD, and includes an Arabic Flagship program. Also in SBS are the
American Institute for Maghrib Studies; Arizona Center for Judaic Studies;
Center for Middle Eastern Studies, a Title VI National Resource Center; and
Middle East Studies Association.

Known for its support of interdisciplinary endeavors, the university has made
study of the environment a strategic priority. UA has notable strengths in
environmental sciences and social sciences. Related units include Institute of
the Environment; Center for Mediterranean Archaeology and the Environment;
Department of Soil, Water and Environmental Science and School of Natural
Resources & the Environment in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
UA also features two related Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs: Arid Lands
Resource Sciences and a Global Change PhD minor. The School of Geography &
Development offers an Environmental Studies BA.

Applicants should submit a statement of interest (including information about
which SBS unit/field is a likely home, given the applicant's expertise, and a
description of research and teaching experience and plans), a curriculum vitae
(CV), two examples of written work, and a sample course syllabus. The names
and contact information of three recommenders should be included on the CV.

Review will begin on December 1 and continue until the position is filled.

for posting number F20258.

The University of Arizona seeks people with diverse perspectives and
experiences and is a committed Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action
organization. Women, minorities, veterans and individuals with disabilities
are encouraged to apply. As an Employer of National Service, we also encourage

programs.
