Dear Colleagues, back in May some of you might remember that I sent out a query to the list asking about experiences with a targeted cross-disciplinary hire, where the successful candidate would be housed in one of several disciplinary departments (FYI, our particular search is not environmentally-related).
I received a large number -- and wide diversity -- of responses. Thank you very much to all who took the time to share their experiences. They offered me, the others on my search committee, and the dean with useful perspectives and cautionary tales that have already proven very valuable. In the hopes that these insights and experiences will be of use to others -- on both sides of the hiring process -- I am attaching an edited compilation of the comments that I received.
