Dear colleagues,

In follow up to our previous email requesting nominations for ESS offices,
we have an additional post that needs filling this year. If you would like
to be nominated for the editor position for the ISA Compendium Project
please send your name and a brief (100-200 word) bio to one of the members
of the Nomination Committee (see below). Nominees must have a deep
understanding of IR and environmental studies and be willing to devote
adequate time and energy to the role. A detailed description of the project
is pasted below.

Also, please do continue to send in nominations, self-nominations welcome,
for positions on the ExCom, Sprout, and Nominations Committees. We'd like
to receive nominations by March 7th if possible.

Best,
Nominations Committee

*The ISA Compendium: A Guide for the Perplexed and for potential section
editors.*

In 2006, the ISA decided to create a scholarly reference for our
discipline, a work comprising a series of literature review essays
(refereed and approximately 10,000 words each) for the myriad topics in our
expansive field. Each section in ISA generated a list of topics to be
considered by the editorial advisory committee for inclusion in the
Compendium, and the sections nominated "Section Editors." The print
version of the Compendium, *The International Studies Encyclopedia, *was
published in 2009. Since then, the Compendium has continued as a living
project as *International Studies Online*, published by Wiley/Blackwell.
Each year we are contractually obligated to produce 20 high quality new or
substantially updated essays for publication for the Compendium as a
whole. In practice, if each section contributes a few updated and/or new
essays, the total will be met.

Section editors are nominated by the section (via the section's appropriate
decision-making process). The nomination is sent via the General Editor
(who may consult with the section if there are any concerns about the
nomination). The General Editor will forward the nomination to the
Editorial Board, which will have the authority to approve the nomination.

*At present [February 2014], the Editorial Board is being set up. Section
Editors are being appointed for the moment in an acting capacity. As soon
as the Board is constituted, it will act on the nominations and formally
appoint the Section Editors.*

The Section Editor or the Section Co-Editors are responsible for

· finding authors for the approved topics,

· choosing essays for updating and asking the authors to update,

· finding referees,

· conducting the section editor's review of each submission, and

· making an editorial decision, and

· passing essays accepted at the section level on to the General
Editor.

As General Editor, I review the essays sent by the section editors and,
assuming I agree with the section editor's decision, I grant the final
approval for publication. (If there are problems, I consult with the
section editor about how to resolve them.)

We are also entering a new phase of the Compendium in which new topics are
being proposed and added, and the section editor provides a leadership role
in that effort, as well. Finally, it has been customary for the section
editor to write the introductory essay for each section. Your section
already has an introductory essay written by the original section editor.
The new section editor could propose a supplemental introductory essay or
could would with the previous section author to update the existing
introduction.

The process for already approved essay topics works like this: The SE
identifies people who are knowledgeable about Topic A (an approved topic)
and asks someone from among the knowledgeable people if he or she would be
willing to write a literature review essay on Topic A. If the prospective
author says, "yes," then a deadline, 5 months hence, is assigned. During
that 5 month period, the SE lines up a referee, who is also knowledgeable
abut Topic A. When the essay is submitted, the SE quickly looks at it to
make sure that it fulfills the basic requirements (i.e., it is a literature
review essay and not the presentation of new research). Assuming that it
does, it goes out to the referee for (blind) review. After receiving the
referee's report and after having read the paper him/herself, the SE makes
an editorial decision: revise and resubmit, reject, or accept. The
expectation is that most authors should be able to provide a high quality
literature review essay after a round (or two) of revisions. The goal of
the SE in writing the SE's decision letter is to provide the guidance that
will make the essay of publishable quality. After an essay has been
approved by the section editor, it is passed on to the General Editor, who
conducts an independent review to make sure the overall quality is high and
that the requirements of the Compendium are met. As you see, having an SE
who is energetic and committed to making the literature of your section
easily accessible through this reference work is critical to the success of
the project.

I'll be happy to answer questions and talk more about the Compendium
Project. It is, by the way, a great opportunity for junior scholars.
